Talavera Tiles or Mexican Tiles Ceramic Clay Hand Made

Mosttiles are unique hand made and painted tiles from Mexico. They started in Puebla, Mexicoand that is where the "originals" gee from. However, the true or original Talavera Tiles are very expensive. The clays and paints used are superior, that is why they cost sooo much. They can run anywhere from $2 - $6 per tile.
All other "talavera" tiles are essentially knock-offs or repro's of the originals.
Most measure 4x4 inches and are the standard size. Others measure 2x2, 6x6 and even 12x12. Most are 1/4" thick.
Unique patterns from Spain and Mexico are used to create the designs. Most are used in kitchen backsplashes, countertopsor bathrooms or showers. Some are used outside on a homes facades, arounddoors, windowsand outdoor walls or fountains. Many are used on stair risers and even as accent pieces on floors, especially is you are using Saltillo tiles. Accenting every corner or even creating a large pattern on the floor is gemon. The can be used around fireplaces too as they are heat resistant.
The most asked question, can they be used outside? It is not regemended, as they may not endure freeze/thaw cycles. BUT ... big but ... in Mexico they are used outdoors. Granted the weather is not as cold ... however even in high altitude cities where it does freeze and ocassionally snows they are used outdoors. They may develop cracks or crazing line, but this just adds to the "rustic" look of the tiles. I actually placed them outside in Illinois, Missouri and now in the New Mexican mountains for over two years at 7,500 feet and none have cracked or broken.
Original tiles came from Spain and were imported to Mexico back in the 16th century. They are baked using local clays and paints. Most are hand made, some are hand painted too. Some are fired up to three times.
My tiles are high quality tiles, with high quality lead-free paints and prompt, friendly service. Alot of the cheaper tiles you see listed that do not say LEAD FREE contain lead based paint. It is essential you ask the seller if the paints contain lead. If you inspect them closely usually you can tell the cheap paint vs. the good paint. Every so often I sell the Puebla tiles. They are the best you can buy, as the paints are brighter and clay is better. All Puebla tiles are individually hand made and hand painted.
I carefully package all of my tiles with several boxes, packing peanuts and care. 95% arrive unharmed.
Any questions, please ask or check out my okay auctions.
